They Were Waiting for a Signal — Level 2

Cover Their Eyes

Beside the bodies were two handmade objects unlike anything investigators expected to find.

When investigators examined the scene more closely, the clothing was strange enough on its own.

Both men were dressed in formal suits. Over those suits they wore raincoats, despite having climbed a hill in the heat of August.

There were no obvious signs that either man had been attacked. Their belongings were still nearby. Nothing about the scene immediately explained why two electronics technicians had climbed Morro do Vintém—or why neither of them had come back down.

Then investigators noticed what had been placed over their faces.

They were not sunglasses.

They were not protective goggles.

They were crude masks fashioned from lead.

The Lead Masks

Evidence

Homemade Lead Eye Masks

Investigators recovered two handmade lead masks at the scene. Each had been shaped to cover the eye area, with no openings cut for vision. The masks became one of the defining pieces of physical evidence in the case.

But the masks weren’t the only things recovered. Among the papers and personal effects was a handwritten note. Investigators could read the words. Understanding what they meant was another matter.

Level Cliffhanger

The masks were strange. But the handwritten note found nearby was stranger—and it contained a time, an instruction, and something they were apparently waiting for.
