They Were Waiting for a Signal — Level 1

The Men on the Hill

Two electronics technicians left home for a routine trip. Days later, they were found dead on a hillside dressed for something no one could explain.

On August 20, 1966, a young man flying a kite on Morro do Vintém in Niterói, Brazil, noticed something unusual on the hillside. What investigators found there would become one of Brazil’s strangest unsolved mysteries.

Two men lay dead beside each other in the grass. They were identified as Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana, electronics technicians from Campos dos Goytacazes.

Nothing about the scene looked ordinary.

The men were dressed in formal suits beneath raincoats. There were no obvious signs of a violent struggle, and the circumstances surrounding their deaths offered investigators no immediate explanation for why two electronics technicians had traveled to this isolated hillside.

Their trip had begun days earlier. They had left home saying they needed to purchase equipment and materials connected to their work. They traveled toward Niterói, made purchases along the way, and were later reported seen heading toward Morro do Vintém.

Then the trail stopped.

By the time their bodies were discovered, whatever they had gone to the hill to do was already over.

But beside them were clues suggesting that this had not been an ordinary business trip—and that the two men may have climbed the hill expecting something to happen at a very specific time.
